Alleged illegal rice worth P90 million discovered in warehouses in Manila

Following the seizure of more than P90 million in rice thought to have been smuggled, three warehouses in Tondo, Manila, were padlocked, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) reported on Monday.

The products were from Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Agents discovered P310 million worth of additional commodities in these storage facilities in addition to the rice grains.

Children's toys, cosmetics, kitchenware, home goods, videoke machines, fabrics, cosmetics, pharmaceutical items, shoes, clothing, and general commodities were among the available goods.

"These businesses are possibly smuggling and hoarding them, which further adversely impacts our efforts to bring down the prices," Customs Commissioner Bien Rubio said in a statement. "While our government and kababayans scramble to make rice cheaper and more accessible," he said.
