Puerto Galera, in Oriental Mindoro, has been dubbed the "diving capital of the Philippines" due to its abundant marine biodiversity.
On September 5, members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Puerto Galera Municipality passed a resolution designating the town as the country's diving capital.
Puerto Galera, located within the Verde Island Passage, the epicenter of marine shore fish biodiversity, boasts an underwater world teeming with diverse marine life, making it a sought-after destination for divers from all over the world.
Puerto Galera is also home to 62 registered dive shops affiliated with major international diving organizations, as well as over 32 world-class dive sites.
UNESCO designated the town as a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1976.
Puerto Galera Bay was recognized by Les Plus Belles Baies Du Monde in 2005.
